Checking T-Mobile’s website you are now no longer greeted with the familiar HTC G1 device. Sadly it has gone the way of the Dodo bird. Ray Walters (a huge G1 fan, who just recently replaced his G1 for a Samsung Vibrant) probably said it best.
This is a hard article for me to write! I feel like I am saying goodbye to a good friend, a comrade in arms, a companion that has been with me through thick and thin. I remember the first time I saw the image to the left, and got really excited about the future of smartphones, and the fact that I finally would have an alternative to the iPhone.
The G1, is no more. Meaning, T-Mo has stopped listing and selling the unit officially on their site. Of course, there are still plenty out there you can get your hands on if you really wanted to, but the life cycle of the G1 has officially come to an end.
The G1 was a ground breaking device, the first to really challenge the iPhone’s dominance of the market, and the handset that gave birth to sites like our own.
The G1 is gone, a moment of silence needs to be observed as a piece of our history moves on. We will always remember you.

Dell Offered the Streak up for pre-sale and it looks as though business has been good! There are a lot people excited about this device and according to Dell’s blog post the Streak has outsold all other devices offered as a pre-sale before. The big shocker is that Dell has officially announced that there are no plans to certify the device for use on T-Mobile’s network. Secondly is that it will receive an OTA update for Android 2.2 (Froyo) later this year, expect it to be later rather than sooner remember this is Dell’s first Android device so expect some growing pains. They also announced that the device will be available in Carbon Black on Launch with New Cherry Red available at some time soon. They are continuing to offer pre-sale of the device and also offer a $0.99 bluetooth headset to those that pre-order as well as free 2-Day shipping with the option to upgrade to Next Day. Dell has also confirmed today that the device will launch tomorrow!

Several sources are reporting that T-Mobile’s Motorola Charm “Social Messaging” phone will be free with new Family Plan activations. Great for a back to school gift for the teenager. Glad I don’t have a teenager… Though it hurts me to think how bad things are going to be when my kids are teenagers. Anyways it a good way to get your kids off a feature phone and into an Android device if your getting a new contract!
The poster here that we’ve received today kind of speaks for itself, we’d say. By all appearances, it seems that T-Mobile intends to continue its tradition of making family plans attractive with blowout handset pricing — and the next model to get the free treatment will be Motorola’s upcoming Charm featuring Android packed into a form factor that you rarely (well, never see) for the platform. Realistically, $100 is probably the high end of the reasonable range for something with the Charm’s specs, but at $0, it’s a downright bargain compared to the typical free-on-contract dumbphone fare. Now let’s just extend this offer to non-family plans, T-Mobile — and go ahead and make it permanent while you’re at it.

First let me be clear while Sprint CEO Dan Hesse has said this it by no means says that they have plans or are even thinking about it, he just simply said “it makes sense”. I think it would be great for T-Mobile to get a bigger subscriber base and I think it would be great for Sprint to start getting away from CDMA and getting into the GSM bands.
Let’s be completely honest and say that while the concept of the combined carriers is great in terms of subscriber count, the different technologies and other incompatibilities would mean some serious long-term considerations in order to successfully merge the companies. We can only hope that if such a merger were to come to pass, that it would look something completely unlike a Sprint and Nextel debacle and that Deutsche Telekom would lead the way.
